This is a war of words, this mother, Brooke, and her mother, Marsha, have aggregately written Dr. Phil 23 times. Brooke claims her mother is verbally and mentally abusive and and keeps Brooke’s children in the basement. In addition, she claims Marsha calls her bosses and landlords saying she is a prostitute.
Marsha says her daughter is selling drugs, severely neglects her sons, passes out, is a meth addict and always lies. She says she went to court to fight for custody of her grandsons because of Brooke’s dangerous life style. Marsha won in court and says there is no longer any relationship remaining between her daughter and her. The only thing left between them is mistrust, accusations of slander and bitter resentment.
Marsha was originally awarded temporary custody of the grandkids, 2 years later Brooke got the children back but after a short time Marsha was awarded permanent custody of her grandchildren.
Marsha claims Brooke has taken her by the throat 2 times and threatened to kill her, one time after Marsha got custody of the boys. Brooke allegedly told her mom she would kick her until she never got up again. Brooke says she has never laid her hands on her mom and the mom just wants her to get heated so she can call the police. The police officer did not observe any marks around Marsha’s neck and there were no witnesses.
The court order says that Brooke failed to comply with court orders and 3 times she tested positive for meth. The court papers go on and on about Brooke’s non-compliance with the court orders. Dr Phil told Brooke these papers came directly from the court. Brooke claims that these papers do not remotely reflect anything that happened and that she complied with everything the court asked her to do.
Dr Phil then asked Brooke if she was high or had taken anything that day. Adding, that Brooke was asked to take a drug test before the show but she refused to take it. Brooke answered she is not high and has not taken anything.
Brooke’s father, Carl, and her stepmom, Vera, join in the fray. Vera says she experienced Marsha being abusive to the boys. Vera is in the audience and Dr Phil asks Vera if she has any factual information about Marsha’s treatment of the boys? Vera goes on and on with accusations and then Marsha verbally attacks Vera about her alleged faults. The disagreement ensues.
Dr Phil then gets Carl on the phone to join the interview. Dr Phil asks Carl how he is doing and Carl replies “I am fine, how are you”? Dr Phil replies, “Well apparently you are a son-of-a-bitch”. (The audience laughs.) Dr Phil tells everyone that he is not interested in what the adults are doing except when it concerns the boys.
Dr Phil assesses the situation to Carl, it appears that they are after Marsha because she wields her power and control over the grandkids like an axe. Carl agrees and another verbal exchange occurs. Again Dr Phil interjects, what matters is what is in the best interest of the children.
Dr Phil gets Brooke to agree that in the last 10 years she has made some poor choices. Then the doctor plays a recording of what the kids had to say about their grandmother and mother. Paraphrasing, Brooke’s youngest son, he says he loves his grandma because she gives him a home and food and she is nice and makes allot of jokes. The oldest boy says that grandma takes him places like the fair or camping and grandma is a little strict, sometimes getting very angry if she has to ask him to do something over and over. The youngest says he has allot of fun with his mom, while the oldest boy says that sometimes he is sad because he has not talked to his mom for a long time. One boy said, “My mom is a drug addict, she left me with other men and she was violent”. The other boy says he wants his mom to get help, and he wants his mom to try and get them back so they can be happy.
“Out of the mouth of babes” (Dr Phil). It is apparent that the kids love their grandma, but she is a little strict. They love their mom also, miss her and want to have an expanded relationship with her, according to Dr Phil.
Brooks’ ex-husband, Ron, appears on a video conference call and tells that Brooke and he were dysfunctional drug addicts. Now 15 years after the divorce, Ron remarried and has his act together. Ron wants Brooke to get help and then her life will fall into place.
Dr Phil explains to Brooke her options and tells everyone that it is important for them to work to reunify their family. Then Dr. Phil gives his final observations and advice to Brooke about getting the help she needs.
