Segment aired 21 August 2015. Amber Rose had no idea that a company was using her name to solicit hopeful models. The model and actress had her name being used to hook aspiring models in a prostitution scam that turned models into prostitutes. Reports indicate that the company designed an elaborate scheme that promised a celebrity photo shoot, a clothing line and a fake phone call with Amber. The phone call which showed an image of Amber seemed to be a bad connection and the call dropped off. Models were told there agreement included a date with a rich man and if they would be intimate, they would get better gigs and money. One of the models saw through the scam and went to the police. The Los Angeles Police Department is now investigating to see if a crime was committed.
The Doctors panel interviewed Amber live on stage. She says she was extremely outraged when she learned they were using her name to trick models into prostitution. The video that the scammers were using was from a U-stream video that she made 4 years ago, says Amber. One of the models contacted Amber, by text, and told her that she was trying to get her to have sex for money. That is how Amber learned of the scam.
The panel talks a bit about identity theft and how this takes it to a different level. An attorney, Christina Gagnier, Technology Lawyer, joins the panel by remote. She is asked, what can be done to protect our identities? She explains that, we have to treat the social and on-line media just like it is the real world. On Face Book she says you can fix your settings so that photos for example will be shared with only certain people. Changing your Face setting from public to private will keep Google from picking up your information. It is an ongoing investigation and the panel said they will keep us all highlighted about its progress.
