Segment viewed 11 September 2015. Can a Christian lose their salvation? Pastor Laurie avoids a straight answer to this question by talking around it. The way he likes to answer this question is with another question. Was the person really saved to begin with? We wonder if a person has lost their salvation but the truth is they may have never been a genuine believer at all.
Remember the parable of the sower, where the sower threw the seed on the ground that was embedded with rock. The seed grew up quickly but the rocks hindered the deep growth of the roots. Jesus said in Mark 4:16, “These are like those who hear the word they respond with great enthusiasm but with such shallow soil of character that when the emotions wear off and some difficulty arrives there is nothing to show for it”. (Pastor Laurie reading)
We do not work for our salvation, we work it out. If a person is really a Christian there will be evidence in their life. Works do not save a person but they are a good evidence that they are saved. God has given you your salvation as a gift from God but at the same time people are going to see evidence in your life that you are Christian.
Five fast tests from 1 John as to whether a person is really a Christian. If you or anyone is really a Christian the first question to test is, number 1, you will confess that Jesus is Lord. (1 Joh 4:15) Jesus said if you acknowledge me before people, I will acknowledge you before my Father and the angels. If you deny me before people I will deny you also before the Father and the angels.
Number 2, if you are really a Christian, you will obey the commands of Christ. (1 John 5:3) Not perfectly, not flawlessly but you will obey the commands of Christ. This is a problem for some people. They want to obey and they do obey some of the commands but the commands they do not like, they ignore. Jesus said, you are my friend if you do whatsoever I command you. Not just do the commands that you agree with. What does a person do when he comes to a verse in the Bible that he does not agree with? The answer is to change your opinion because you are wrong! The Bible is non-negotiable, so if you do not agree with it you need to change.
Number 3, you will be miserable while sinning. (1 John 3:9) If one is really a child of God, you will really be unhappy when you are sinning. A real believer will not be happy in his sin. The Bible says, whom the Lord loves he chastens. If you are saved then you feel discomfort, you feel a sense of guilt, you feel wrong about it. If you commit sin and feel nothing then one must wonder if you are saved. The Bible says that if you are without discipline you are fatherless. A person cannot continue in sin and be a Christian.
Number 4, you will keep yourself from the devil. (1 John 5:18) We are not to keep ourselves saved that is God’s job. We are to keep ourselves safe. That means we are to avoid certain people, places and activities that would make it easier for the devil to tempt us. We should be around people, places and things that would build us up spiritually.
Number 5, do you love other Christians? (1 John 5:1) If you are a real believer then you will love God’s people. Forsake not the assembling of yourself together as a matter . . . but exhort one another and so much more as you see the day of the Lord approaching. We all need fellowship with God’s people. Are we really a believer?
Work out your own salvation with fear a trembling. How can we do this, it is hard. Philippians 2:13 says, “It is God who works in you”. It is God who works in you both to will and do of His good pleasure.
